What a day yesterday, finally had some clear weather and took to do the bits on the Discovery that I needed to do..adding to the bits already done, the complete list is;
Changed;
Steering Damper (Completed before Xmas) Rear Spring set Rear Shocks. Rear Spring retaining Clamps Rear Bump stops Rear Anti-Roll Bar Bushes Rear Trailing Arm Upper Links. Rear Tailing Arm Lower Links. Rear Brake Pads.
I removed the front wheels and started to remove the front Suspension before light ran out so today i have the following to do;
Replace Front Springs. Replace Front Shocks. Replace Front Spring Retaining Clamps Replace Front Anti Roll Bar Bushes Replace Front Radius Arm Bushes.
Then I have a few small electrical jobs to do to sort a few minor niggle out and that will do me for the time being, but in doing the above I have discovered that I need to do the following in the coming months;
Replace all Wheel Bearings (One needs it now realistically, the rest have done 120,000 miles so I think they should be done before Morocco) Replace Rear Radius arm Bushes Replace Front Anti-Roll Bar drop links. Replace Rear Anti-Roll bar drop links. Replace Steering Arm Drop link Ball Joint. (Have Already bought) Replace the Rear A Frame Ball Joint. (Have already bought)
By the time I complete all that the old girl will be ready for Morocco in October, with the exception of some new tyres for the trip as the current AT2's will have reached the end of their useful life by that time. Tyres will be changed from 255/65R16's to 235/85R16's as these give a slightly higher ride height and will help to save on fuel (being less resistance to the road) and in Morocco the ride height is more important than the width.

All my current upgrades/maintenance is completed, was out testing today in some local all year open lanes...damn it's good to have effectively new suspension all round...I am thinking that some of my potential jobs, the steering, do not actually need to be done as the vagerys appear to have been caused by the knackered suspension and worn bushes...she tracks straight and true and the steering is nice and tight..the ride is smooth and the body roll almost none existent.
Just goes to show that we should all pay more attention to our suspension...

I am going to do the bushes once the spring comes in, I will also replace the back axle. not sure if I am going to use a roof rack/tent or stick to a mk1 tent!! I am going to fit a split charge system so I can run the Sleep apnoea machine at night, this was one issue I had on the trip to Gambia.
I will look at a second fuel tank.

Charlie, are the springs from my 300TDi the same as the standard springs on the classic, if they are then I have a full set of Front and Rears that you can have.
I took them off only because I wanted heavy duty ones instead of standard as it reduces the body roll. They are decent springs and your more than welcome to them if they are any good to you.
With regards tents...toying with the roof tent plan myself.
Split charge is a good idea if your going to run your machine at night, I have a solar cell for trickle charge that will be installed once the roof rack is made and in place, that way I have a trickle charge all the time.

It seems I have more work to do on the old Girl. I have developed a brake issue whereby they cam be a little "soft" after a long trip or when repeatedly used around town on short stop/start journeys. I suspected several things and a couple of posters have replied on LandRovernet.com and the DOC saying the same things...so next 6 days off shift means I shall be doing the following.. - Change rear wheel bearing that is flaky
- Change brake hoses
- Drain, replace and bleed brake fluid (Current Fluid is at least 7 years old!)
At the same time I am going to change the pads in the hand brake drum as they are originals and i think it's about time they were replaced as there is virtually no more adjustment possible on the adjuster...it's a cheap and easy (ish) job so I may as well do it.

I changed all the metal pipes in the Autumn on the rangie and because I had drained the fluid it made a heck of a difference!
a floppy wheel-bearing will give the same sort of symptoms because of the disk moving about and pusing the pads back.

Jim i would imagine there wil be plenty of other things to do before october time. Try and use your discovery everyday. Better things fail before then on the trip.

I sold the Range Rover I had because paying £425 a year just to park it on the road, plus insurance was simply not economical, with money the way it has been the last couple of years, paying to run a 4.6 V8 was not practical.

Thats fair enough jim. I think your disco is a 300tdi but can you please tell me when you fit 235/85 tyres to her. I found mine really gutless on steep hills till i did the fuel tweeks. Tho you might have tweeked yours anyway.

Tho you might have tweeked yours anyway. At the moment I have 255/65R16 General Grabber AT2's fitted. I clean my air intake system about every 5000 miles (pipes and intercooler) and change the fuel filter at the same time...makes the world of difference. There is a simple tweak that can be done to the fuel pump on the 300TDi but to be honest with a clean air/fuel system you don't really need it..
